Do I need a visa?

Updated: 2025-01

Visa rules depend on your passport, destination, and trip purpose/length. Here’s a fast checklist:

  • Check official sources first. Search “Country name immigration visa citizens of Your nationality”. Prefer government (.gov) or embassy pages.
  • Transit rules matter. Even if you don’t leave the airport, some hubs require a transit visa.
  • Passport validity. Many countries require ≥6 months validity and free pages.
  • Onward ticket & funds. Be ready to show return/onward travel and proof of funds or accommodation.
  • e-Visa windows. Some visas open only 30–90 days before arrival—set a reminder.

Vaccines & travel health

Updated: 2025-01

Check health advice from your country’s official travel health service or WHO. Typical timing:

  • 6–8 weeks before: consult a travel clinic (boosters, region-specific vaccines, malaria risk).
  • Pack a basic kit: pain/fever meds, band-aids, rehydration salts, motion sickness tabs.
  • Bring prescriptions in original packaging + a doctor note if needed.

Some destinations (e.g., Yellow Fever areas) require proof of vaccination—keep a digital + paper copy.

eSIM vs SIM vs Pocket Wi-Fi

Updated: 2025-01

eSIM = easiest if your phone supports it; buy online, activate before landing. Physical SIM is cheap locally but needs a counter/KYC. Pocket Wi-Fi good for groups, but you’ll carry/charge an extra device.

  • Short trips (≤2 weeks): eSIM with enough data (5–15 GB).
  • Long trips: monthly eSIM/SIM often cheaper.
  • Rural coverage: check carrier maps; consider dual-eSIM (primary + backup).

Money, cards & simple safety

Updated: 2025-01

Use a no-FX-fee card where possible; keep a little local cash for small shops/markets. Withdraw from bank ATMs to avoid dynamic currency conversion.

  • Backup card in a separate place; enable location-based security notifications.
  • Photocopy key docs (passport) and store in secure cloud.
  • At night or in crowds: cross-body bag, phone leash, simple awareness beats gadgets.
